Young execs killed in car crash
Cassel, Meier were victims of drunk driver

Scott Rudin Prods. vice president Sam Cassel and Red Wagon Prods. vice president Rhiannon Meier were killed when their car was struck by a driver who ran a red light. Cassel and Meier, both 28, died at the scene.
Jose Luis Vargas, the driver whose car struck their Honda Civic, was arrested for driving under the influence and booked on suspicion of murder, according to the LAPD.

Cassel spent six years working for Rudin, prior to which he worked for Broder. Meier had spent a year working for producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher. Cassel and Meier were traveling home from a dinner date with friends when their car was struck at Sunset and Gower on Saturday morning at 1 a.m.

"Sam was our friend and colleague, and we loved him enormously," Rudin said. "It is impossible to get our heads around this tragedy, and our hearts go out to the families of Sam and Rhiannon."

Wick and Fisher said: "Rhiannon filled every room with her huge smile, intelligence and enthusiasm, and you could already see the bright lights in her future. We are stunned by her loss, and our hearts go out to her family and friends, for whom she is clearly irreplaceable."

LAPD's West Traffic Division detectives are handling the investigation. No details were forthcoming yet about funeral arrangements.

i can't imagine the pain that their families are feelin at this time . while they were robbed of these two innocent lives , they are not the only ones to be affected . the driver , although still alive , will be charged with 2nd degree murder . life sentence . not only does he have to live with the devestatin reality that his stupid actions caused , but his family will suffer as well . idiot . i really hope it was worth it . sam was a dear friend of a dear friend . my heart goes out to all who are affected by this tragedy .

imperfect union .

this past friday , nov 30 mr . schoolhouse & i had the pleasure of attendin shepard fairey's (OBEY) private art opening for his latest exhibit , imperfect union . the show opened to the public sat, dec 1 , & unfortunately for that public all of the pieces were already red tagged , aka sold . his wife was tellin us that for the london show they just did only 4 out of 180 pieces went unsold . what this dude does with mixed media is rather amazin . his works combine new age art concepts with the real meanings behind socio-political propagandist messages . if you are in the LA area , or plan to visit soon pls do not hesitate to check out the exhibit .

Imperfect Union, a solo exhibit of new works by Shepard Fairey. This show displays a provocative collection of politically charged paintings, screen prints, stencils, album covers and mixed media pieces rich with metaphor, humor and seductive decorative elements.Imperfect Union is derived from the first line of the U.S. Constitution “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union”. For Shepard Fairey, critiquing the imperfect union, far from disparaging the United States, is a patriotic step toward shaping a more perfect union.

The exhibition is comprised of artworks which scrutinize the dynamics of the imperfect union such as the unholy union of government and big business and the dichotomy of symbols and methods associated with ideologies of the American Dream. Fairey’s artwork comments on underpinnings of the capitalist machine and monolithic institutional authority critiquing those who support blind nationalism and war. Conversely, Fairey recognizes that most individuals would rather suffer than stand up for their beliefs as illuminatingly expressed in the Declaration of Independence with the statement “all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.” Fairey celebrates the role of counter culture, and independent individuals willing to question the cultural paradigm and advocate peace. Fairey employs the graphic language of the subjects he critiques or celebrates blending Art Nouveau, hippie, currency and revolutionary propaganda styles. His works utilize bold iconography coupled with decorative elements and, upon closer inspection, reveal sophisticated layers of collage. The resulting pieces are both boldly aggressive and seductively subtle.

Indonesian ‘tree man’ has bark-like growths
Doctor hopes to treat rare skin condition that causes warty roots

updated 10:59 a.m. PT, Fri., Nov. 30, 2007

An Indonesian man suffering from a rare skin condition that causes his body to be covered with tree-like growths may soon get help from an American doctor, according to a report in the British newspaper the Telegraph.

Dede, 35, who has gnarled growths sprouting from his hands and feet, has baffled medical experts since the warty "roots" began appearing after he injured himself as a teenager.

But dermatology expert Dr. Anthony Gaspari, a specialist in immunology and skin allergies at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, told the newspaper that he can treat the condition.

After testing samples of the lesions and Dede's blood, Gaspari, who examined the villager as part of a documentary, concluded that the infection is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a fairly common condition that usually causes small warts to develop in the genital area.

However, a genetic flaw has prevented Dede's immune system from controlling the warts, allowing the virus to produce a substance that caused cutaneous horns on his feet and hands, the newspaper reports.

Because of a genetic condition the Indonesian villager's immune system can't fight off a virus which causes massive bark-like growths.

Gaspari told the newspaper that a course of synthetic vitamin A should clear up most of the massive warts and root-like tendrils that have left Dede unable to work.

Although the medical treatment won't give him a normal body, the growths should shrink enough that Dede could use his hands, the doctor told the Telegraph.

Despite his genetic condition, the villager has been otherwise healthy and has two children, ages 16 and 18. However, his wife has left him and his children have been brought up by extended family nearby, according to the paper.

The Indonesian Health Minister Siti Fadillah Supari said that an Indonesian medical team would cooperate with Gaspari, but the minister also reportedly criticized the Discovery Channel, who produced the TV documentary, for exploiting the villager.

how do you mask ur pain ?
like , when the walls start closin in & there's no immediate solution for ur sadness . like , when it's hard to fake a smile . like , when it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel even tho u know it's there . u just lapse in good emotional judgment & succumb to ur emotions because that's the human thing to do , but in actuality they say it's not healthy so . . .
how do u mask ur humanity ?
i guess u just say "fuck it" , smile anyway , & hope to center that sadness in yoga .
nobody loves a crybaby . they only want to see u happy . cuz consistent happiness is realistic .
so they say . so , cheers to that .

J*DaVeY vs HEAVy ?

no .

but i came across this interview that we did with the philly weekly & it's a little strange . why do journalists need to pit artists against one another ? J*DaVeY & HEAVy are two separate entities that are both fresh & unique in this bland musical spectrum . why spend half the article on how we feel about each other ? is that even relevant to our massive amounts of talent ? no . i guess it's simply "fascinatin news" ? whatever . peep the swipe :

Funk Punks

Two black groups think outside one box, are put inside another.

by Craig D. Lindsey

There are two music groups on two separate sides of the country, and both consist of one guy and one girl. Both met up back when they were teenagers. And both are a copy editor’s worst nightmare, spelling their names in ways that are downright wacky: J*DaVeY and HEAVy.

At first glance you suspect these two groups are following in the same pattern as boy/girl musical unions like Eurythmics, Everything but the Girl, Groove Theory or even the Captain & Tennille. There’s the girl at the mike, the guy behind the keys. Now, let’s start to dancin’!

But it isn’t just all about churning out club grooves with these two. Both J*DaVeY and HEAVy subscribe to the belief that R&B and rap aren’t the only cornerstones of black music. They believe New Wave, electro, synth-pop and even punk can be done—and done well—by those with a darker skin tone.

J*DaVeY are practically making it their mission to spotlight their eclectic influences. When the L.A.-based pair did a guest DJ set on my favorite public-radio show Chocolate City a few months back, they played David Bowie, Brian Eno, New Order, the Stooges and a bootleg track from Prince. And how did the listeners react? “People were actually really into it, which was cool,” says vocalist Jack Davey. “We were happy about that. Somebody called and thought we were from London.”

Davey, along with her music man Brook D’Leau, have been indie darlings for several years now, dropping their own New Wave soul bombs from the City of Angels. New Wave soul—that’s a good way of putting it, right? “We’re still finding out as the days progress,” says D’Leau with a laugh. “It’s definitely becoming dance- and electronic-oriented, but there are so many other facets and elements incorporated into it.”

The group’s fresh sound has gotten them attention from Warner Bros., which has them working on an album for an early 2008 release. “The label came to us,” says Davey. “It wasn’t like we were out, you know, searching for a label to find us. That was never our intent. We were content for a while with just doing what we do. And if it came along, then great. We went along with it.”

HEAVy—residing way over on the other side of the country in South Jamaica, Queens, New York—also have a record deal. Indie label BBE just released their first full-length JAzzmonEY$$ in October. The album’s title is based on a long and complicated dream lead singer Nicky Guiland once had, and has the same electronic, synth, retro vibe as the band’s West Coast counterparts.

“It’s not that we were going for that sound for this album. That’s just who we are,” says producer/keyboardist/saxophonist Casey Benjamin. “I mean, we’re ’80s babies, you know? We grew up when pop had substance.”

Both parties are aware of each other and their respective music (both have mutual friends), but they’ve never crossed paths. They also aren’t looking to start some East Coast/West Coast, Biggie/Tupac beef.

“I’ve heard their music before, and honestly, I don’t think we sound alike” says Davey. “I don’t think we’re to be compared. I think the only reason people compare us is because we’re black kids who are doing something that isn’t urban music. So people automatically want to pit us against each other. It’s not even like that.

“We respect what they do. We’re just glad that more black artists are going out on a limb and doing something different and actually being bold enough to break through this monotonous shit and still do well. And they’re independent, and they’re doing very well.”

Those kooky HEAVy kids take the comparisons way less seriously. “I’m just like Jack Davey,” says Guiland, inciting a huge laugh from Benjamin. “I look just like her. We’re actually twins.”

the reincarnation of a goddess ?

please tell me you read about this :

BANGALORE, India (AP) - A grueling, 24-hour-long operation to remove the extra limbs of a 2-year-old Indian girl born with four arms and four legs was a success, doctors announced Wednesday.

The girl, named Lakshmi, has been revered by some in her village as the reincarnation of a Hindu goddess. She was born joined to a "parasitic twin" that stopped developing in her mother's womb. The surviving fetus absorbed limbs, kidneys and other body parts of the undeveloped fetus.

A team of more than 30 physicians removed Lakshmi's extra limbs, salvaged her organs, and rebuilt her pelvis area, Dr. Sharan Patil said from a hospital in the southern Indian city of Bangalore.

"Beyond our expectations, the reconstruction worked wonderfully well," said Patil, the lead orthopedic surgeon during the operation.

The complications for Lakshmi's surgery were myriad: She was born with four kidneys, entangled nerves, two stomach cavities and two chest cavities. She has not been able stand up or walk.

The surgery also included separating the fused spines, Patil said. "Every step was successful. There was no setback whatsoever."

Physicians had anticipated an especially difficult challenge would be rebuilding Lakshmi's pelvis, but that went smoothly also.

"We were able to bring the pelvic bones together successfully, which takes away the need for another procedure," Patil said.

Children born with deformities in deeply traditional rural parts of India, like the remote village in the northern state of Bihar that Lakshmi hails from, are often viewed as reincarnated gods. The young girl is no different - she is named after the four-armed Hindu goddess of wealth.

"Everybody considers her a goddess at our village," said her father, Shambhu, who goes by one name. "All this expenditure has happened to make her normal. So far, everything is fine."

Others sought to make money from Lakshmi. Her parents kept her in hiding after a circus apparently tried to buy the girl, they said.

Patil said Lakshmi's family was "overwhelmed," and they expected to see her Wednesday afternoon.

Doctors at Sparsh Hospital in Bangalore said the child was popular among staff and patients. The hospital's foundation paid for the operation because the family could not afford the bills.

"She's a very cute girl," hospital spokeswoman Dr. Patil Mamatha said. "She's very playful and gets along well with others."
